Cairo

The Alliance is excited to be a part of 'Cairo'; a landmark 'Vertical Village' being developed in the prime Melbourne suburb of Southbank.

Young people with a disability deserve to have a 'life worth living'.

Along with the usual mix of private residential apartments and affordable housing, 20% of the accommodation in Cairo will provide supported accommodation and in-house support services for people with a severe and profound disability, giving them community living options, flexible support and the opportunity to live their life as they choose.  In view of the limited number of places, potential residents will be asked to apply, and will be assessed by an independent selection panel.

As well as the residential component, Cairo will include a park, library, community facilities, cafes, and commercial space, creating a real community hub in the heart of Melbourne.

YPINHna has been working together with The Mackie Group, a Victorian developer, and a consortium of major disability organisations to accomplish this this exciting project.

Update

October 2012

The Cairo project is honoured to receive an award for it's innovation and community leadership in the 2012 Rotary Community Service Awards in Melbourne in October.  The Cairo group is thrilled with the recognition by the Rotary club, and looks forward to working with and developing connections with the local community.

February 2012

In February 2012, the City Of Melbourne, the Mackie Group, and a consortium of community agencies including Young People In Nursing Homes National Alliance came together on the former J.H. Boyd Girls' School site to announce the development.

"Apartment living, in concert with Cairo's onsite support, will enable young people with disabilities to access the city's cultural, social and economic opportunities to the full," said Dr Bronwyn Morkham, National Director of the Young People in Nursing Homes National Alliance.

"And in doing so, Cairo will set a new benchmark in support and accommodation excellence for young people with disabilities in one of Melbourne's premier residential locations."

It is currently estimated that Cairo will commence construction in late 2013.
