System Coordinators

Working with younger people in aged care, we designed and trialled the Systems Wrangler model. It provides them with a System Coordinator, to streamline their interaction with state and federal health, disability, and aged care systems.

System Coordinators

System Coordinators support people with complex care needs to

  • Avoid placement in residential aged care (RAC)
  • Leave RAC to live safely and confidently in the community
  • Build the capacity of service providers to deliver support to people with complex needs

We campaigned for the introduction of this role by

  • Promoting the Systems Wrangler model in workshops and presentations
  • Submissions and evidence to the 2019 Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety
  • Detailed discussions with the National Disability Insurance Agency and State/Federal government departments
  • A 2020 pre-budget bid to the federal government.

The 2020 federal budget announced $10.6m to fund a Younger People in Residential Aged Care (YPIRAC) System Coordinator program to contribute to the YPIRAC strategy. To continue the System Coordinator program for the life of the YPIRAC Strategy, a further $16M was allocated in 2021 to expand the System Coordinator workforce.
